Summary

• The free edition is GPL v2 or later. Use it, modify it, redistribute it.
• The premium edition’s PHP code is also GPL v2 or later. What you buy is a licence to receive updates, support, and premium functionality on a set number of sites.
• Bundled assets — images, fonts, compiled JavaScript, and stylesheets — are covered by their own licences, listed below.

If that seems contradictory, it isn’t. The GPL governs the code. Your commercial licence governs the service around it.

1. Free edition

The free edition of SEO Merlin is licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 2 or (at your option) any later version.

This program is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify
it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by
the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or
(at your option) any later version.

This program is distributed in the hope that it will be useful,

2. Premium edition

What you are buying

A premium licence grants you, for as long as the licence is active:

• the right to install and activate the premium edition on the number of sites your plan specifies;
• access to premium features;
• software updates, including security updates;
• email support.

Each activation consumes one seat. Deactivate a licence from a site you no longer use to free the seat. Current prices are on the Pricing page.

The code itself

The premium edition’s PHP code is licensed under the GPL v2 or later, as WordPress requires of anything that runs inside it.

This means you have the freedoms the GPL grants over that code. It does not mean your licence key, your update access, or your support entitlement may be shared — those are services, not code, and they are governed by your commercial licence and the Freemius agreement.

What is not permitted

• Reselling or redistributing the premium edition as your own product.
• Sharing, publishing, or reselling your licence key.
• Removing, disabling, or circumventing licensing functionality.
• Using a single licence on more sites than your plan allows.

Doing any of these may result in termination of your licence without refund.

3. Where purchases happen

Premium licences are sold by Freemius, Inc., acting as merchant of record. The purchase contract is between you and Freemius on our behalf, under their End User License Agreement.

That agreement governs payment, billing, renewals, and refund eligibility. Our Refund Policy sets out the vendor-side position that agreement refers to.

4. Bundled third-party components

Each component’s full licence text ships inside the plugin package.

5. Your content

Everything the plugin produces on your site — generated text, structured data, reports — is yours. We claim no rights over your content, and we cannot access it.

Where content is generated by an AI service under your own API key, your rights in that output are determined by your agreement with that provider.

6. Warranty

The software is provided without warranty, as set out in the GPL text above and in our Terms of Use. Nothing here limits rights you have under consumer protection law that cannot be excluded by agreement.
