Website Cookie Policy
Which cookies this site sets, what each one is for, and how to turn off the ones you don’t want. Short version: one banner, your choice, no dark patterns.
Last updated: 23 July 2026
This covers seomerlin.com, the website. The SEO Merlin plugin doesn’t set cookies on your visitors’ browsers — for what it does with data on your own site, see the Plugin Privacy Policy. For everything else about your data here, see the Website Privacy Policy.
1. What a cookie actually is
A small text file a website asks your browser to store, so it can recognise something next time — that you’re logged in, that you already dismissed a banner, that you’ve been here before. Some are essential plumbing. Some watch what you do. We’ll be clear about which is which.
2. Your choice, and how it works
When you first arrive, a consent banner appears. Nothing optional runs until you decide.
- Accept — analytics cookies load and we get to see which pages are worth keeping.
- Reject — only the strictly necessary ones load. The site works exactly the same.
- Change your mind — reopen the consent settings from the cookie link in our footer, any time.
Rejecting doesn’t degrade the site, hide content, or nag you again on every page. That’s the whole point of asking honestly.
3. Strictly necessary cookies
These make the site function. They can’t be switched off, and under the ePrivacy rules they don’t require consent — but you should still know they exist.
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| cookieyes-consent | CookieYes | Remembers which cookie categories you accepted, so we don’t ask again | 1 year |
| wordpress_*, wp-settings-* | WordPress | Login session and admin preferences — only ever set if you log in | Session – 1 year |
| _lscache_vary | LiteSpeed Cache | Serves the correct cached version of a page | Session |
4. Analytics cookies
These only load after you accept. We use Google Analytics 4 to see which pages people read, which ones they leave immediately, and where they came from. It tells us what to write more of and what to fix.
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| _ga | Google Analytics | Distinguishes one browser from another so visits aren’t double-counted | 2 years |
| _ga_M53ZGD247Z | Google Analytics | Keeps session state for this specific property | 2 years |
| _gid | Google Analytics | Distinguishes users over a 24-hour window | 24 hours |
| _gat | Google Analytics | Throttles how often requests are sent | 1 minute |
IP anonymisation is on. We don’t link analytics data to your name or email, and we don’t use it to target you with anything.
5. What we don’t set
Worth saying plainly, because most sites in this category do:
- No advertising cookies. No Google Ads, no Meta Pixel, no LinkedIn Insight tag.
- No remarketing. We don’t follow you around the internet with our own ads.
- No data brokers. Nothing here feeds a third-party audience list.
- No social trackers. No embedded like buttons phoning home.
If that changes — say we start running ads — this page gets updated and the consent banner will ask you again before anything loads.
6. Third-party services
Two things can set cookies from outside our own domain:
| Service | When it applies | Their policy |
|---|---|---|
| Google Analytics 4 | Every page, if you accept analytics | policies.google.com/privacy |
| Freemius | Only at checkout, when you buy a licence | freemius.com/privacy |
7. Turning cookies off in your browser
Beyond our banner, your browser gives you the final say. Blocking everything may break other websites — ours will survive it.
- Chrome — Settings → Privacy and security → Third-party cookies
- Firefox — Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
- Safari — Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data
- Edge — Settings → Cookies and site permissions
You can also opt out of Google Analytics everywhere with Google’s browser add-on.
8. Changes to this policy
New cookie, new tool, new purpose — the table above gets updated and so does the date at the top. If a change needs fresh consent, the banner will ask before anything runs.
